At midnight, the door to Room 404 in the old Yong’an Lane apartment building opened.
I’m Su Xiao, an overworked programmer living in Room 402. Before Grandma died, she pressed a white jade safety pendant into my hand and said it would ward off the yin energy in Yong’an Lane. She warned me again and again: Never take it off.
Then, at midnight, Granny Zhang, who had fallen to her death three months earlier, knocked on my door.
In her hand, she clutched the snapped red cord from around my neck, along with the safety pendant that should have been against my skin.
And at the end of the corridor, the door to Room 404, bricked up for ten years, was seeping a blood-red glow.
Grandma was right. Once the door to Room 404 opens, no one in this building will escape.
