The ’70S Tough Guy: My Reborn Wife Wins Over the Family with Her Cooking

In 1977, in the countryside of northern Henan, orphan Su Sui is pushed into a river by her stepsister and former fiancé. When she opens her eyes again, her soul has become that of a top chef at a state-run restaurant in the 1980s. Faced with the humiliation of a broken engagement and the loss of her family home, she decisively cuts ties with those who wronged her. Desperate to secure a place for herself, she grabs the army battalion commander Gu Yanshan, who has just rescued her, and says with a stubborn gaze, “Commander Gu, I can cook and keep a home. Marry me, and I'll treat you well for the rest of my life.” The taciturn, stern-faced Gu Yanshan looks at the clear-eyed young woman before him and gives a low-voiced reply: yes. Word of the marriage spreads, and everyone in the military compound mocks them, waiting to see the country orphan make a fool of herself. Su Sui says little and simply puts her heart into cooking. When Gu Yanshan comes back from training, there's always a bowl of warm porridge at just the right temperature to comfort him. In the depths of winter, the fragrant pot of pork and pickled cabbage simmers while he silently chops wood and tends the fire, saving the tenderest meat for her. When food is scarce between harvests, she turns coarse grains into crisp, savory flatbreads and soft, sticky date cakes. He stays by her side every step of the way, making sure no one gives her a hard time. When jealous people spread rumors that she's profiteering, Gu Yanshan immediately shields her and silences the whole compound with a cold glare. When military wives clamor for her pastries, he clumsily helps knead the dough and lends a hand. He remembers that she gets cold easily and warms the brick bed every night. She understands how hard he works and fills his rough-and-ready life with warmth. With no System or magic space to rely on, Su Sui uses her cooking skills to make a place for herself, put nasty relatives in their place, win over the neighbors, and melt Gu Yanshan's heart. The once cold, stern officer becomes famous throughout the compound as a devoted husband, with “My wife says” on his lips at every turn. Amid the fragrance of home-cooked food and the tenderness of passing years, the two protect one another in the 1970s and make their modest life together sweeter than honey.
