[Historical romance, household intrigue, substitute bride, family secrets, strong female lead, ensemble cast of women] The day Wen Zhiwei married into the Xie family of Nanling in place of her elder half-sister, her husband died on their wedding night. Twelve principal wives have died in the Xie family over the past twenty years, and everyone says the Xie ancestral hall devours people. Wen Zhiwei thought her family had simply sent her to fill a vacancy, until she found a fragment of the family genealogy in the ancestral hall. Then she discovered that those women hadn't died young: someone had carefully erased their names from the records, stroke by stroke. She needs to uncover not only the truth behind her mother's death seven years ago, but also how many women's names the Xie family has traded away for its wealth and glory. If the Wen family has sent her to fill a hole and the Xie family has made her a substitute, she refuses to die for either of them. She will investigate old cases, turn the family records inside out, seize the power of the principal wife, and bring back into the light the names that should never have been forgotten in the ancestral hall.
