In ancient times, a rift to the Netherworld opened in the mortal realm. Endless vengeful spirits poured through, leaving death and destruction in their wake and annihilating souls wherever they went. This era came to be known as the “Great Silence.”
To save the world, three sages joined forces and sacrificed themselves: the Clear Sky Sword Ancestor forged the Tomb-Guarding Stone from his sword bones, the Nethernight Lord used his divine soul to form a sealing array, and the Stillwater Buddha Venerable built the Tomb of Return to the Void with his golden body. Together, they permanently sealed the Netherworld Rift beneath the Wangchuan Crossing in the Southern Frontier, bringing the mortal realm a thousand years of peace.
But a thousand years later, the Clear Sky Sword Ancestor's successor coveted the power of heaven and earth contained within the Tomb-Guarding Stone. He slandered the Nethernight Lord as an “evil demon” and, together with the conservative faction of the Stillwater Chan Monastery, launched a surprise attack on the Nethernight lineage. They stole half the Tomb-Guarding Stone and drove the Nethernight survivors into the northern wastelands. The Stillwater Chan Monastery knew the truth, but feared that revealing it would plunge the world into chaos and weaken the seal. So it chose silence, allowing the lie that “Nethernight is evil, Clear Sky is righteous” to spread for a thousand years.
