The Sword Sovereign Returns: Starting with Protecting a Declining Sect

Atop a floating peak above a sea of clouds, Yun Cang, the last member of the Tianyan Sect, sat alone in the great hall. His fingertips brushed the dust-covered jade throne of the sect master. Behind him, a thousand white jade steps descended past solemn statues of the sect's ancestors. In this age of declining cultivation, spiritual energy had dried up and the sect had withered. He had long since grown used to the silence.

Until one day, a baby's cries came from the foot of the mountain. He had meant to walk away indifferently, but then he saw the infant clutching a dim jade talisman in its tiny hand: the Tianyan Sect's lost core inheritance token, missing for a thousand years. At that moment, the sect's grand formation, silent for a thousand years, began to hum faintly, like a dead tree bursting into spring.

The wind had never stopped blowing through the Sword Mound. It swept past shattered stone tablets and silent remnants of weapons, keening with the battle songs of a thousand years ago. Yun Cang's white hair whipped in the wind as his fingertips brushed the dust-covered jade throne of the sect master. Its icy touch sank straight to his bones. This was the Tianyan Sect, once a sacred ground where tens of thousands of immortals paid homage. Now, only he remained, guarding this desolate graveyard.

The age of declining cultivation was a blade that severed spiritual energy and cut through people's hearts. He, Yun Cang, the Supreme Void Sword Venerable, had once wielded a sword whose light chilled the nineteen continents. Now he was no more than a living corpse, waiting to die amid crumbling walls. An inheritance? A laughable, extravagant dream.

The cries at the foot of the mountain were faint yet stubborn, piercing the silent sea of clouds. He had no intention of paying them heed, just as he had ignored everything else for the past thousand years. But the object clenched in the baby's hand shimmered in the gloom with a faint, almost imperceptible warmth: a cracked jade talisman, dim and dull. The instant its light appeared, a deep, distant hum, as if from primordial times, rose from the depths of the earth beneath his feet, a land long judged utterly lifeless.

The heart of the dead sect had beaten its first pulse for this abandoned baby.
