The story begins with Cui Qiu being demoted to the Huanyi Bureau and ends with Cui Di, who has been obsessed with Cui Di since he ascended the throne and waited for his "return" throughout his life. It shows the subtleties of human nature and the obsession with love in the power struggle.
The names of the characters in the story all have a sense of coldness - Cui Di (dysprosium is an arrowhead, which means sharpness), Cui Qiu (qiu means a pool of water, which means deepness), Gu Chong (lofty), Shufei (wenshu), Aheng (heng means vanilla), etc. The ending is set to have Cui Qiu jump off the city wall and die, but Cui Di always believed that she was still alive and stayed with her in hallucinations until her death, echoing the core setting of "always thinking that she is still with him".
