Everyone in the Immortal Dynasty said that Yue Lianji would not live to see eighteen.
It was fate, they said, though her stepmother had made sure of it, feeding her bowl after bowl of medicine.
At the moment before her death, she heard her stepmother chuckle beside her ear. “Lianji, be good and drink this medicine. Once you do, you won’t have to suffer anymore.”
Reborn at sixteen, the first thing she did was climb over a wall to take the prefectural examination.
She wanted to live! She wanted to uncover the truth behind her mother’s death and see what the “Heavenly Dao” that had sentenced her to death really looked like.
Only later did she learn that her mother had walked this road too.
Her mother had placed first in the palace examination and risen to become a third-rank female immortal. Then she died.
Before her death, she left behind one sentence:
“Lianji, don’t take the examinations! You’ll die if you do.”
Yue Lianji tucked those words away in her heart, then kept moving forward.
Seventh in the county examination, fifth in the prefectural examination, fourth in the palace examination.
Sixth rank, fifth rank, upper fifth rank, fourth rank…
Step by step, she walked the same path as her mother.
When she reached the threshold of the third rank, someone told her: Women are not allowed inside.
This was the seventh rule, unchanged for three thousand years.
Yue Lianji smiled.
“Then I’ll be the first.”
In the Immortal Dynasty’s three thousand years, she became the first woman to break the seventh rule.
Those who came after called her the Imperial Tutor Yue Lianji, the greatest female immortal of her age!
But she said, “I only finished the road my mother could not complete.”
