Passing Through Yiwu: Wild Growth at Forty

On the night of his fortieth birthday, Chen Feng sat alone in his cramped rented room in Yiwu and finished a bowl of steaming clear broth noodles. The hot soup couldn’t warm the cold reality: survival had brought him to a dead end, and the first half of his life lay in ruins behind him. He had once been young and reckless, making a fortune overnight. He had also been imprisoned and betrayed his family, crashing hard after reaching the peak of success and wounding the people who loved him most. After his release, he drifted from place to place, falling repeatedly and struggling back to his feet as he scraped by in Yiwu’s rough, authentic world. This isn’t a glossy startup success story. It’s the true story of a middle-aged man rebuilding his life amid the ruins, spending the rest of his years repaying what he owes and searching for redemption. At forty, he has nothing, but he also has the chance to start over.
