The case squad has been solving crimes at breakneck speed lately, but Su Che is growing more and more uneasy.
The killer in a dismemberment case turned himself in. A crucial lead in a child abduction case appeared out of nowhere. Every breakthrough in a serial murder case came at just the right moment, as if someone were pushing them forward.
Then, one early morning, Su Che returned to the office to retrieve a file and saw a familiar figure heating up a boxed meal in the microwave, moving as naturally as if he were at home.
“Eating this late?” Su Che asked casually.
The man turned around, boxed meal in hand, and smiled. “You’re still awake too.”
The next day, Su Che reviewed the security footage. He saw the man rifling through files in the archive room late at night, slipping a note into a newly arrived evidence bag, and deleting something at the computer.
Su Che sent a screenshot to the tech department. “Find out who this is.”
Five minutes later, his phone rang.
“Chief,” the voice on the other end said, trembling slightly, “his fingerprints... they match the partial print recovered at the serial crime scenes ten years ago.”
Su Che clutched his phone as someone knocked on the office door.
“Chief, come out and eat. I’m buying boxed meals today.”
