Seventeen-year-old Jiang Wan transfers from Nancheng to Yuncheng No. 1 High School. She seems aloof and distant, but hides a pain no one knows about. Abandoned by her biological mother as a child, she grew up in the countryside with her grandmother, Lu Yingrong. Now, her grandmother is seriously ill, forcing her to return to the Jiang family, where she is not welcome. There, she reunites with her childhood friend Shen Yuchen, a boy who has been by her side since they were eight. The two cautiously grow closer at school, and their unspoken affection quietly blossoms in the little moments of everyday life.
Yet the shadow of fate never lifts. Jiang Wan is diagnosed with terminal stomach cancer and has little time left. The Jiang family treats her as a pawn to secure their own interests, binding her to the Yan family with a marriage contract. Her mother, Zhao Yu, and her adopted sister, Jiang Zhi, exclude and hurt her in ways both overt and covert. She hides her illness from everyone and bears the pain alone, yet remains kind to everyone around her: her close friend Yuan Ranxing, who stays with her through her final days; her younger brother Jiang Che, who protects her in silence; and her classmates Shi Qi and Xia You'an, who give her a brief taste of warmth.
On the eve of the college entrance exams, Jiang Wan leaves school for good. Shen Yuchen is forced to return to S City when his father falls into a coma after a car accident. By the time he finally makes it back, all he can do is stay with her through her final days. At dawn on June 20, Jiang Wan dies peacefully in his arms, leaving him with one last request: “Take good care of A-Che for me. Don’t do anything foolish.”
In the years that follow, Shen Yuchen joins forces with Yuan Ranxing, Song Yu, and Yan Huai to gather evidence of the Jiang and Yan families’ crimes and bring those who hurt her to justice. He takes over the company and raises Jiang Che to adulthood. He lights three thousand eternal lamps for her.
