Gentle Ripples Through the Years, Endless Years

The wind in Haicheng, a small city in Liaohai, swept past the port’s machinery workshops and curled around the rehearsal hall of the cultural center’s song and dance troupe. Chen Shouzheng, a veteran mechanic at the machinery plant, lost his spouse in middle age and raised two sons and a daughter on his own. Wen Yunshu, lead singer of the troupe, brought up a son and a daughter alone, her gentle nature hiding a steely resolve. Two broken families came together through an unexpected twist of fate. Their five very different children formed a lively, sometimes bickering, blended family. The eldest daughter, Chen Nian'an, was responsible from a young age and kept the household running, becoming the anchor of the newly formed family. From selling tickets on the port ferry to singing at a city nightclub, she stubbornly grew with the times, caring for her family while guarding a secret deep in her heart about the true parentage of her youngest sibling, Chen Xiangyang. The second son, Chen Qinxue, and his childhood sweetheart from next door, Lin Xiaotang, had been inseparable, but their families’ remarriage kept them from becoming a couple, leaving them with nothing but youthful regrets. Zhou Lei, Chen Shouzheng’s apprentice, pursued Chen Nian'an with all his heart, but ultimately fell in love with Wen Yunshu’s daughter, Wen Xiaoya, leading to a romance full of farcical twists. Over thirty years of hardship and change, Haicheng’s streets transformed, the machinery plant kept roaring, and the songs at the nightclubs kept changing. This family argued, fought, resented one another, and shared warmth. Through the everyday worries of food and bills, and the sweeping changes of the times, their bonds of blood and affection helped them weather every twist of fate and bridge every divide. The years passed, calm and unhurried. The warmth of ordinary life is what touches the heart most. This tale of everyday family life spanning half a lifetime eventually ripened in the passage of time into a gentle, enduring warmth.
