"Ping Yao Zhuan" is a classic of the Ming Dynasty novels about gods and demons. It was originally compiled into twenty chapters by Luo Guanzhong, and was later supplemented and adapted into forty chapters by Feng Menglong. It is the first full-length novel about gods and demons in the history of Chinese literature. It was once called "Three Kingdoms" and "Water Margin" and has a profound influence. The vernacular version uses popular and fluent language to restore the fantasy essence of this classic masterpiece, allowing ordinary readers to easily understand the magic, magic and various phenomena in the world.
The story begins when Bai Yuan, a disciple of the Nine Heavens Mysterious Lady, steals the Heavenly Book "Book of Wishful Desires" and carves it on the stone wall of Baiyun Cave. Thousands of years later, the Heavenly Book reappears in the world, attracting all kinds of demons, immortals and warlocks to compete for it. The fox mother saint aunt, the egg monk hatched from the egg, Hu Yong'er, the reincarnation of the fox fairy, and others, by chance, learned the spells from the heavenly book, practiced them, and created troubles in the human world, stirring up troubles. The novel is set in the Northern Song Dynasty, connecting urban life and political events. The second half of the novel revolves around Wang Ze's uprising in Beizhou: Hu Yong'er and Wang Ze got married, relied on magic to gather people to rebel, and established themselves as kings, but lost the hearts of the people because of their dissolute and immoral ways. In the end, the imperial court sent Wen Yanbo to lead the troops to suppress the rebellion. With the help of the "Three Sui" (Ma Sui, Li Sui, Zhuge Suizhi) and the Nine Heavens Mysterious Goddess, the rebellion was put down, the Book of Heaven was restored, and the White Ape resumed his immortal duties.
The vernacular version retains the twists and turns and bizarre plot and vivid characters of the original work, and removes the obscurity of the literary language. It not only shows the fantasy showdown between demons and magic, but also contains a hidden reflection on the social customs and political realities of the time. It is a masterpiece of classical gods and demons that is both interesting and of historical value.
