The Peerless Spirit Comforter

People are made up of yin and yang: the soul is yang, while the spirit is yin.

When a person’s allotted years run out, the body decays, the three souls leave the body, and the seven spirits scatter. The lone wisp of yin energy that refuses to disperse becomes a ghost.

Ghosts are beings of pure yin, without blood or flesh, shadow or form.

The faintest can be scattered by a gust of wind.

But those burdened with deep resentment can cloud people’s minds and claim their lives.

Most ghosts are supposed to be governed by the Underworld and sent on to reincarnation.

Yet those who died unjustly, with hatred in their hearts, in agony, or silenced by murder, may cling too fiercely to their obsessions and harbor too much resentment to leave the mortal world, even if it means their souls are scattered and they break the laws of the Underworld.

Xie Mu is the last heir to the art of spirit-soothing.

While others slay ghosts and banish evil, Xie Mu puts comfort and deliverance first. He does not kill recklessly or destroy without cause. He seeks only to soothe souls, resolve resentments, and guide the dead on their way.
