Yang Xiaoyu grew up in the Zui Xiang Yuan brothel in Bianliang, getting by through scams and petty cons. After overhearing a military governor's secret conversation, he is dragged into a political conspiracy and, by a strange twist of fate, given a minor ninth-rank post as a relay-station clerk, in charge of a supposedly haunted waystation.
