Synopsis

Shen Che transmigrates to the Southern Song dynasty, earns himself the title of new top scholar, then serves three years as a county magistrate and receives an “outstanding” performance review. He’s happily waiting to return to Lin’an for a promotion and a fortune. But when he passes through a relay station in Huzhou, the local officials insist on holding a welcome banquet for him. Fine, a banquet is a banquet, but they also drag in a disheveled female prisoner, accuse her of adultery, and ask him to judge her. Shen Che takes one look. Isn’t this Wu Shuji, one of the four great female poets of the Song dynasty? History says she was framed and imprisoned, then bought as a concubine by a man surnamed Zhou, without even being left a proper name. Then he looks at the cup in his hand. Wait, the maid switched his wine for tea. All right. He may not have any other faults, but he can’t stand seeing this kind of thing. He’ll overturn the case, clear her name, give her a proper identity, and... well, arrange a marriage too, while he’s at it. What’s the big deal about taking a wife? His mother has been nagging him for years. This is the perfect way to get her off his back. And as for those people insisting on “marriage arranged by parents and matchmakers”... Shen Che grabs one of the officials by the ear and yells, “My mother’s in Lin’an! Find me eight or ten matchmakers!” Come on, I’m a transmigrator. You think I’ll let rules from nine hundred years ago push me around?
