In March 2026, an unknown virus breaks out in a city. Infected people quickly lose their minds, their bodies mutate, and they become “Altered” who know only how to attack and devour. Social order collapses overnight, and once-bustling cities are reduced to ruins.
Lin Wan, 22, is an ordinary office worker. When disaster strikes, she is shopping at a supermarket with her father. As the shelves collapse, he shoves her out of the way but is swept off by the panicked crowd. Lin Wan wakes after three days unconscious to find the world transformed. She has only one thought: go home and find her father.
Zhou Yan, 28, is a veteran. When disaster struck, he had arranged to meet his girlfriend, Su Ran, at a subway station, but she never came. He stays in a shelter deep underground, gazing toward the entrance day after day. She promised she would come. She promised he would wait for her.
The two survivors meet in the darkness. Lin Wan agrees to wait with Zhou Yan for two days. After that, whether she has arrived or not, she will set off to find her father. Two days later, Su Ran still hasn’t come. Instead, Zhou Yan faces a choice he cannot avoid: remain in these hopeless ruins, or accompany this determined young woman into a wider unknown.
They don’t know that the disaster is far more complicated than they imagine. Where did the virus come from? Is there any chance the Altered can recover? Scattered radio broadcasts make vague mention of a secret project called “Ark Plan,” while rumors of “the Immune” begin to spread among the survivors. Some people are naturally immune to the virus, and their blood may hold the key to a cure.
