The story takes place in March 2012, when fighting breaks out in Goma, a city in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, a war-torn African country. Anti-government forces establish the M23 Movement, a real-life group, and launch a large-scale assault on Goma, throwing the entire eastern region into turmoil. The eastern cities of Goma and Bukavu are home to many Chinese businesses, as well as hotels, restaurants, pharmacies, and supermarkets run by Chinese expatriates. There is also a place known as “China Peninsula,” the camp of the engineering detachment of China’s peacekeeping forces in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. In these two chaotic, troubled cities, Chinese compatriots stand together and help one another, experiencing a series of moving stories of solidarity in hardship.
With passionate prose, the work vividly depicts Chinese compatriots persevering amid the flames of war, celebrating the kindness, resilience, and noble character of the Chinese people. Amid the years of war, pure love and friendship endure, along with a profound spirit of patriotism.
