Financial analyst Lin An unexpectedly transmigrates into the body of An Qian, a twelve-year-old girl living during the Jiajing reign of the Ming dynasty. She lives in the wealthy Jiangnan region, but her family has fallen on hard times. Her mother died young, leaving her to depend on her father, a man who never seems to take proper work seriously. Ye Wentang knows a little about everything except studying for the imperial exams: he can handle himself in a fight, has some knowledge of herbal medicine, and can even repair farm tools and manage accounts. His neighbors find him rather mysterious. But in an age when “all pursuits are inferior, only scholarship is supreme,” having a father who knows many things but cannot pass the exams means a bleak future for An Qian.
