1939, Huaibei Plain, Qian'an Village.
Twelve-year-old Rongshun watched his second brother marry Xiuying.
Three days later, the second brother was kidnapped by strong men and was never heard from again.
People in the village said that Xiuying was stupid, a widower and a nobody. But she wouldn't leave, and Rongshun wouldn't let anyone bully her.
Rongshun was eighteen years old that year and decided to join the army.
The night before leaving, my mother put Xiuying's hand into his palm.
"You guys have a good time."
Amidst the hail of bullets, he delivered letters, fought, and almost died on the battlefield. He only remembered one sentence in his heart - it would be great if he could come back alive.
In the spring of 1949, Rong Shun walked back to Qian'an Village step by step on the dirt road in the Huaibei Plain.
The children in the yard have exactly the same facial features as him.
"It's done, call me daddy."
