Bygone-Era Novels with Clear-Eyed, Sensible Heroines Who Mind Their Own Business, Plus Great Writing

I can't stand spoiled, clingy heroines or stories with lots of children. Please avoid too many face-slapping scenes against nasty side characters, since they get really awkward when overdone. Something more low-key would be great. Please!
Historical-Era Novel, Military Marriage, Raising Kids
The male and female leads raise the male lead's older brother's son, Zhendong. Please help me find this book. That's all I can remember.

The child was called Young Master and was ostracized...
