A Lowly Soldier Guards the Gate from the Start, and the Princess Weeps for Me

On the walls of Xuanwu Gate, Mu Yan wiped the blood from his face and looked down: thirty thousand enemies outside the city, and eight hundred battered soldiers within.

He wasn’t from this world. He’d arrived only seven days ago. But he understood war: if the commander surrendered and the gates opened, everyone would die.

That night, he killed the general who wanted to surrender, then carried a half-grown child out of the city through a filthy drainage ditch. Before he left, a blood-soaked princess grabbed him and asked his name. He didn’t tell her.

Only later did he learn that the princess he’d rescued was named Lin Wanwan. Only later did he learn that the people hunting them belonged to the Blood Fiend Sect, one of the Seven Demonic Sects.

A dying old man took him in, taught him how to cultivate, and pressed a jade token into his hand with his last breath. “The key to the Immortal Mansion. Keep it safe for me.”

Ten years.

From a foot soldier who knew only how to swing a blade, he fought his way to Foundation Establishment, then to the Golden Core stage. He tracked down every bastard who’d hunted them for three years, one by one, settling old scores and collecting what was owed.

But what about that girl?

He couldn’t forget the look she’d given him across the flames atop Xuanwu Gate.

The word he’d heard was that the Blood Fiend Sect’s young master was hunting someone.

A girl named Lin Wanwan.

Mu Yan stood on the mountaintop and glanced southeast.

“Wait for me.”

Then he leaped into the air and flew away.

This is the story of a ruthless man.

He’d lost count of how many people he’d killed. He’d never counted how many he’d saved, either. Sometimes he’d risk life and limb for his brothers; sometimes he’d turn and run to save his own skin. Some called him heartless. He said, “You only get one life. How can you survive without being ruthless?”

It had been eleven years since he set out to find the girl who’d asked his name. He wondered if she still remembered his face.
