On the brink of death on a rainy night, Chen Zimo, an ordinary college student, awakens the “Spirit Pact Physique,” a gift seen only once in a millennium. He forms a guardian pact with the wounded ancient divine beast Suanni. From then on, he is drawn into a mysterious world hidden behind the modern city: the Shan Hai Realm.
Here dwell countless fantastic beasts recorded in the Classic of Mountains and Seas, a shadowy organization bent on ruling both worlds, and a righteous alliance devoted to keeping the peace. Chen Zimo’s spirit companions grow in number: the Jade Rabbit, the Chi Dragon, the Luan Bird, the Qilin, Bai Ze... Each divine beast forms with him a bond that transcends their pact, one they would die to protect.
But the real crisis is only just beginning. The scheme of Di Jun, ruler of the Shan Hai Realm, comes to light, and the fate of both worlds hangs in the balance. Chen Zimo must choose: become the supreme ruler of the Shan Hai Realm, or remain true to himself and live as an ordinary person?
The butterfly effect quietly unfolds: every choice made by one ordinary young man changes the fate of the entire world.
