The work tells the story of family emotions involving 3-4 generations from traveling to Guandong to taking root in Northeast China in the 1930s. The author uses flashbacks to narrate the stories of his ancestors from Shandong to Guandong to the Northeast, and what happened to each character in the family during this period. Grandpa Chu Dashan was born in 1885, and grandma Shen Zuozhi was born in 1908.
