The protagonist's occupation is an ordinary "rust cleaner" affiliated with the city's "Emotional Hygiene Administration". His daily job is not to kill, but to be like a property maintenance worker, holding a special "emotion detector" and a spray can filled with "empathy solvent", shuttling through office buildings, old communities and late-night convenience stores to clean up those sources of mental pollution that make people feel tired.
