An apprentice at a traditional Chinese medicine shop becomes fascinated by telegraphy. Literate and observant, he goes from being a timid young man who fears gunfire and panics in a crisis to someone who can identify codes by sound, translate messages quickly, memorize ciphers with ease, and even combine medicinal herbs for emergency lifesaving treatment. He becomes a key member of a radio team, repeatedly intercepting Japanese military messages and cracking their encrypted dispatches. Working with anti-Japanese guerrillas to ambush the enemy and joining the main force in striking back at the Japanese invaders, he becomes a legendary young soldier in the resistance.
