From the start, he was an idealist rejected by big business, broke and down on his luck, hoping only to use games to rekindle his people’s fighting spirit.

Later, he became the “Devil” in the eyes of players worldwide. Countless people cursed him while crying as they paid for the game, all so they could send the heroes in the game a pair of straw sandals and a hearty meal.

Later still, his games were written into history textbooks and became required study for generations.

A reporter once asked him, “Why have your games been so successful?”

Zhang Yang replied, “I’m just a transporter. I merely brought to life what was already etched into the blood and bones of our people.”
