On my fortieth birthday, I finished writing a novel called The Female Emperor and Her Nine Husbands, then went to sleep.
In my dream, I met nine men.
When I woke up, I was lying in my own bed, wearing my own pajamas. I thought it had just been an unusually vivid dream.
Three months later, my ultrasound report read: Pregnant with twins.
The doctor smiled and said, “At your age, make sure your husband comes with you to your prenatal appointments.”
Husband? I don't even know who the father is.
Until today, when nine men cornered me in an alley:
Li Junwei, the million-follower streamer whose livestreams I'd watched for three months, gripped my hand, his eyes red as if he hadn't slept in three days. “Did you really come to my room that night?”
Li Sheng, the top-tier star from Korea I'd had a crush on for ten years, texted me: “I need an explanation for what happened on the eighth day of the second month.”
Lee Soo-hyuk, the Korean model whose hand I'd shaken ten years ago, asked to meet me. “You appeared in my room, then vanished an hour later.”
Shen Chenchen, a retired special forces soldier, stopped me. “Someone has offered fifty million to have the child in your belly killed.”
Then there was a mysterious private message from an account called “108th-Generation Descendant”: “Grandmother, you disappeared for 24 hours on the night of the eighth day of the second month. Find the truth if you want to keep your child alive. And one more thing: beware the woman in the black wedding dress.”
I looked up. A woman in a black dress was watching me from the mouth of the alley.
She waved at me, then vanished around the corner.
All nine men claim they saw me that night.
My memories of those 24 missing hours: who's lying?
Whose child am I carrying?
