He was once a favored son of heaven who trampled the other's true feelings underfoot. Only after falling into a cage did he realize that the man had long since loved him to the point of madness.

At the late emperor's birthday banquet, Crown Prince Xiao Heng met Wei Wushuang, the Eastern Depot's chief eunuch. Xiao Heng found his gaze deep and unsettling. He made him kneel for hours before the emperor, tossed a peony at his feet, and laughed. “Can a rootless man smell the fragrance of flowers?”

Back then, he didn't understand the storm raging beneath those lowered eyes.

Three years later, Xiao Heng was defeated in battle and stripped of his title. He escaped back to the capital in prisoner's clothes, covering a thousand miles. With nowhere else to turn, he knelt before Wei Wushuang's residence.

The door opened. The man who had once bowed and scraped before him looked down at him and smiled.

“I've waited a long time for you to come beg me.”

From then on, the former crown prince became a caged bird. Wei Wushuang imprisoned him with the gentlest methods and indulged him in the cruelest ways. He was Xiao Heng's enemy, his master, and the only place in the world where he could belong.

Only when Xiao Heng finally learned to depend on him, held in his arms, did he realize that this love, a trap from the very beginning, had already doomed him beyond redemption.

“You're mine. From the first time you smiled at me, you were mine.”

But he didn't say that from that moment on, he was Xiao Heng's too.

You are the cage I could spend my whole life trying to escape, and never fly free of.
