In 1975, when 18-year-old Liu Weidong left the village, he walked with his head down. He didn't dare to look back, fearing to see the shadow of his father squatting under the wall smoking, and also fearing to see the little calf that was beaten to death - it was the most valuable thing in his family, just because it blocked the way of the village bully.
For the next five years, he swept the floors of the county hospital, lit kerosene lamps to read in the utility room, and scavenged for textbooks at old bookstalls. No one knows why he works so hard, only he knows: he can't swallow that breath.
