Completed, with no risk of the story being dropped.
On my first day back in the mountains after quitting my job, I found an old wooden plaque.
It said: Collect one million offerings to revive the mountain god.
I said: I have no money, no guests, and only a ramshackle hut.
The owner of the guesthouse next door handed me a stack of blueprints. “I spent two years drawing these, waiting for you to come back.”
Before I could even get emotional, a line of animals showed up to apply for jobs:
A squirrel wanted to be a speedy delivery courier, the Monkey King wanted to guide hikers, and a wildcat said it wanted revenge on poachers.
That rabbit curled into a ball. “I-I can warn you about geological disasters. Carrots are all I need.”
The little shop went from a ruin to an internet sensation, and one mountain grew into an alliance of four.
Tourists went from none to a full house, and offerings rose from zero to one million.
I thought this was just a story about making money to save the mountain god.
Until he took my hand at the overlook above a sea of clouds and said:
“I’ll protect this mountain, protect you, and stay by your side for the rest of my life.”
