Understand the Yuan Dynasty in one read! Explore history and learn about human nature.
A lively retelling of the Mongolian "steppe dream team"’s glory days and spectacular failures. Following the official historical record while drawing on unofficial histories and all kinds of rumors, this book uncovers how the Yuan Dynasty rose and fell. It offers a detailed look at its military, economy, culture, and institutions, evaluates the strengths and weaknesses of its emperors and key ministers, and provides a comprehensive analysis of human nature! The Yuan Dynasty was one of the most warlike dynasties in Chinese history. It grew out of the Mongol Empire built by Temujin, later known as Genghis Khan, and had one main strategy: "No one can beat us." It crushed its neighbors one after another, until Kublai Khan reaped the rewards and founded the dynasty in 1271, establishing its capital at Dadu, present-day Beijing.
At its height, the Yuan Dynasty’s territory shattered all limits, stretching across Eurasia. It was a superpower by ancient standards, with no need to worry about crossing borders when traveling. Its motto was essentially, "My turf, my rules."
The Yuan emperors were a chaotic bunch, changing hands faster than the pages of a book: more than a dozen came and went in just a few decades. The government was in disarray, corruption was rampant among officials, and ordinary people had a miserable time of it. In its later years, the dynasty gave up trying. Disasters struck one after another, yet there was no relief for the victims. It was the original master of quantitative easing, and eventually drove peasants to revolt in waves. In 1368, Zhu Yuanzhang forced the Yuan Emperor Shundi to flee, bringing Yuan rule in the Central Plains to a decisive end. The dynasty lasted only 97 years, truly a case of "coming fast and going even faster." In short, the Yuan Dynasty achieved legendary status through military might, but fell apart because it was terrible at governing. It rose on its fists and ended in a mess. Though short-lived, its territorial and cultural legacy remains unmistakable to this day.
It is rare to find such a documentary-style online article among the pile of cool articles about male protagonists and female protagonists on the bad streets. Although it is official history mixed with unofficial history and drama, it can still be seen that the author has put great effort into his historical knowledge. I look forward to updates.
