The crown prince is a madman. In front of a crowd of commoners, he forcibly takes the third-place scholar, ruining his own prospects and getting himself stripped of his title as crown prince.
Then he goes completely off the rails.
And Wei Shan is the unlucky scholar he snatches.
(A quick warning: none of the main characters are quite right in the head. They’re all desperately starved for love, and their feelings are somewhat twisted. Perhaps you could read it as a story of mutual salvation? The characters do grow.)
