A strong young woman from the city arrives in the village and finds herself sharing a house with a motley group: a pampered rich girl, a frail, thoughtful companion with a talent for cooking, a lazy complainer who loves taking advantage of others, a kindhearted young man with a military and government background who always makes things worse, a refined young gentleman from a wealthy family, and a timid, honest sort who keeps his head down. Later, they are joined by a young woman from a martial arts family, a man who hopes to marry his way into a higher social class, and a sweet-seeming schemer. The old and new educated youths live under one roof, where conflict is constant and calculation gets tangled up with genuine affection. The strong young woman leads them in farming and hunting. Through one argument and act of support after another, they shed their rough edges, going from distrust to relying on one another with their lives. When the snows clear, they all go their separate ways, but those bitter yet heartwarming years remain the most precious memories of their lives.
