Through Ye Fan’s coming-of-age story, the novel traces decades of social change in China: feng shui for township enterprises in the 1980s, the rise of real estate in the 1990s, and feng shui for internet companies in the new millennium. The antagonists are an organization of “evil masters” who have survived since the Republican era and use feng shui to commit crimes. Working with a “special consultants” agency backed by the authorities, Ye Fan and his brothers wage a shadow war against the organization that spans decades.
