During a night watch at the funeral hall, the coffin explodes. Chen Jiu, a young corpse driver from western Hunan, is called “son” by a Corpse King. His master dies horribly, and a golden silkworm Gu flies out of Chen Jiu's body. To find his mother, who disappeared nineteen years ago, he is forced to take the Corpse King north.
On a mountain road, Chen Jiu saves A Yue, a Miao girl being hunted down. She is so ruthless she digs a bullet out of herself, and she can tell at a glance that the Corpse King is no ordinary corpse. Blood reveals words on a blank letter: his mother is trapped on Phoenix Mountain. A Yue returns to Miao territory to honor a seven-day promise, only to face a deadly calamity. She is a descendant of the Gu God, and when her bloodline awakens, she becomes the new Gu God.
On Phoenix Mountain, mother and son reunite, and the truth behind the nineteen-year scheme comes to light: Chen Jiu's father, Chen Tianxiao, willingly turned himself into a Corpse King; his mother was trapped in a valley to suppress the seal; and his master faked his death to protect him from the shadows. A Yue also turns out to be Chen Jiu's cousin, and their fates are bound together.
An even greater truth emerges: Chen Jiu is the reincarnation of a Kunlun tomb guardian. He has gone through forty-nine lifetimes, dying at the hands of the Corpse Immortal in every one. The Corpse Immortal is a being formed from the resentment of ancient times, immortal and indestructible.
Chen Jiu and A Yue enter the Ten Thousand Gu Cavern, break through the nine layers of seals, and open the Kunlun coffin. The Corpse Immortal emerges. Chen Jiu merges with the power of his past lives and masters the path of cultivating both Gu and corpses. In the battle at Kunlun, his master sacrifices himself for the cause, his father's soul scatters, and the golden silkworm is near death. Their ultimate combined attack, aided by the divine Gu's purification, finally destroys the Corpse Immortal and ends a thousand-year cycle of reincarnation.
A blood-Gu plague breaks out once more in western Hunan, and the ancient Blood Gu King appears, its aura even more powerful than the Corpse Immortal's. Chen Jiu transforms into a Corpse God, while A Yue unites all Gu under her command. Together, they slay the Blood Gu King.
Chen Jiu establishes a righteous path of cultivating both Gu and corpses, and A Yue unifies Miao territory. The two marry and are finally together.
