In the troubled times of the country, Shen Ci, an orphan, meets Su Mian, a maid who has escaped from marriage. The two opened a tofu shop in a slum and resisted exploitation by gangsters and war and turmoil with their sunny minds. From itinerant vendors to shop owners, they supported each other in the worst of times.
