The novel begins with An Lushan's revolt against Fan Yang in the 14th year of Tianbao (755), and ends with the suppression of the rebellion and social reconstruction in the Dali period. It panoramically shows the war that lasted eight years and swept half of China, as well as the struggle, perseverance and rebirth of human nature in the war.
