The Spiritbreaker Chronicles

A true mortal's path to immortality

Seeking the truth of the path to immortality

This world began with a bloody war, yet it is also a prison.

The world divided into four, its order established

A thousand years ago, the blood of gods and demons drenched the land, dimming the stars. The Demon God fell, and the defeated were exiled: the demon race was imprisoned on the southeastern Star Sea Continent, sealed away for all eternity. The Divine Venerable was gravely wounded and passed away a hundred years later. His body neither decayed nor rotted, remaining forever in the Hall of Radiance at Yunqing Sect. The victors divided the land: the immortal race occupied the Central Continent, where spiritual energy was most abundant; the far north lay in perpetual winter, its secrets unknown; and the southwestern desert was desolate and barren, with the mournful songs of exiles heard there from time to time.

From then on, the world's spiritual ley lines were severed. No mortal could awaken a spiritual vein from birth or sense the breath of heaven and earth. The path to longevity and power was closed completely to mortal bloodlines. One could only go to the Hall of Radiance, where sect elders had to channel spiritual energy to nourish the Divine Venerable's body. Only then could one endure the lingering power of that body, which burned through the spinal marrow like a raging flame, and receive a wisp of heavenly grace that had almost entirely dissipated. Fewer than four or five people out of every ten survived the ordeal and managed to awaken their spiritual veins, entering the ranks of cultivators. Those without the talent were left gravely injured and became laughingstocks.

Cultivation was no longer a matter of talent, but a privilege that could only be earned through a “pilgrimage.” The immortal sects and clans held that privilege firmly in their grasp.

In this age of declining magic, heaven and earth no longer nourish cultivators. The world has become more like a dried-up well. Unwilling to let their traditions perish, the great immortal sects and clans joined forces to defy fate, abolishing the status of mortals and reducing them to dependents. Before absolute power, the human emperor and great mortal clans were no more than ants.

“From this day forth, immortals and mortals shall be separate.”

Cultivators can obtain spiritual energy only from spiritual-vein stones.

Defying fate to cultivate always comes at a price.
