He has two completely different marks on him: The South Side gangsters taught him the dirty rules of survival, making him pragmatic and cunning, and never believed in free lunches. The Witcher gives him a central conflict, which is certainly connected to the final outcome.
When Fiona's warmth and the mission of the witcher tore him apart, and when he had to make a choice between "lover" and "the world", Red's "bastard" background was truly revealed. He protects the world, perhaps not because of any lofty ideals, but just because there is Fiona in his world.
