Set in Hanjia Dam, a village in northern China, the novel follows Han Donglai’s complete career in village government. He joins the village committee at thirty and goes on to serve as militia company commander, deputy secretary of the village Party branch, village director, village Party secretary, and finally both Party secretary and director, before retiring. Through his story, the novel offers a panoramic view of the sweeping changes in rural China over three decades.
