The day her family has her committed to a psychiatric hospital for “persecutory delusions,” Gu Zi decides that if she can’t beat them, she’ll join them. Holding a lunch tray, she gives a speech in the cafeteria titled “If Life Has Raped You,” blowing the place wide open and catching the attention of her attending doctor, Shen Shixu. In this hospital, every mad soul hides a polluted wasteland within: an overworked office drone trapped in an endless subway ride, someone pressured to marry imprisoned in a matchmaking market where every person has a price, people who are always running, always smiling, or locking themselves away. Gu Zi discovers she can enter their minds and smash the invisible cages inside. She treats the deepest wounds in the craziest way. This is a story of “mad” people saving one another, of staying clearheaded in an absurd world, and of learning to piece yourself back together after life has ground you to dust.
