The Brick Soul of Chang'an

Lin Wan, a restoration technician on the ancient city wall of Xi'an, was conducting a routine inspection when her fingertips touched a Ming-dynasty brick. In an instant, blood and fire, clashing weapons and charging cavalry flooded her mind. She heard the dying roar of a soldier who had defended the city six hundred years ago: “You who come after us, keep a close watch over Chang'an!”

From then on, she was forced to become a “switchboard operator” between past and present. Every broken brick held a sealed fixation: a Hongwu-era kiln worker afraid the walls would not hold, a courier from the High Tang who had failed to deliver a military message, a student soldier in the War of Resistance who wondered why reinforcements never came... She had to draw on civil engineering, historical research, feng shui, traditional Chinese medicine, psychology, and even economics to resolve these “work-related injuries” spanning a thousand years.

But as her abilities awakened, she discovered that her father's disappearance beneath the city wall ten years earlier had been no accident. A force calling itself the “Grave Robbers” was systematically removing key bricks, intent on erasing Chang'an's memory. Her opponents were ghosts born from the dark side of history, as well as modern elites who believed that “only forgetting lets us move forward.”

When the final “heart brick” emerged, she faced not a lone spirit but the collective trauma and civilizational question that had accumulated in the ancient city over thousands of years: Should we remember, or should we forget? Can protecting a painful past truly light the way to the future?

This is a war fought with knowledge as its blade and the human heart as its shield. The enemy is time, and it is ourselves.
