Lin Xiajuan, 25, new media operator, corporate drone.
At eleven on Friday night, he saw his own death notice while scrolling on the last subway train: his name, ID number, time of death (midnight), place of death. Everything was there.
His first reaction: report it, block it, complain that the app was spreading rumors.
Then he died.
Then he found out that what killed him wasn't a ghost, but a company called Hypnos. The company specialized in "immersive horror experience services," turning entire buildings into sets and neighbors into NPCs. He was just an "experience participant" who had accidentally wandered into a beta test.
Then he found out that the government had an agency called the Special Affairs Bureau, which dealt specifically with supernatural domains operating outside the law. He was given an exceptional appointment as an external consultant.
From then on, Lin Xiajuan's life entered weird mode:
Sent to settle a residential community dispute, he discovered the troublemakers were a group of supernatural beings whose complaint was, "The property fees are too high, and the maintenance fund isn't transparent."
Asked to serve as legal counsel at a hospital, he discovered that it specialized in "existence repairs" for supernatural beings, using equipment made by Hypnos, supposedly with a back door.
Caught up in the struggle between the Special Affairs Bureau and Hypnos, he discovered that the employment contract he'd signed three years ago might be the real culprit.
This is a story about a corporate drone using labor law to take on a supernatural world.
This is a story about a wage slave exposing a shocking conspiracy, one complaint and bad review at a time.
Other people enter supernatural realms relying on brute force. Lin Xiajuan enters them armed with the Labor Contract Law:
"Your company is suspected of illegal employment. I'm reporting you to the Special Affairs Bureau."
