This book takes "Strange Stories from a Chinese Studio" as its principle of "using legends to describe monsters", and takes the artistic conception of "Those who know me are among the black fortresses of Qinglin". It uses a protagonist throughout - the down-and-out scholar Gu Qinglin as a clue to connect the various worlds of humans, ghosts, foxes, fairies and monsters.
Gu Qinglin was born with a "strange mole" on his chest (which coincides with Pu Songling's "sick and barren Qu Tan" dream), and he has been able to see ghosts and ghosts since he was a child. He traveled around the world and recorded what he heard and saw as "Strange Stories from the Green Forest", and eventually became a figure like "The Chronicles of the Netherworld".
