Pei Zhu's Complete Translation of the Three Kingdoms into the Book of Shu

The novel "Romance of the Three Kingdoms" and its derived literary and artistic works have made the deeds of important figures during the Three Kingdoms period known to everyone. To understand the true history of the Three Kingdoms, we can only use "Romance of the Three Kingdoms". "Three Kingdoms" was compiled by Chen Shou, the censor of the Western Jin Dynasty, based on the historical books of Wei and Wu, "Wei Shu", "Wei Lue", "Wu Shu" and the Shu materials he collected. More than a hundred years after its publication, Pei Songzhi, the minister of Zhongshu in the Liu and Song Dynasties in the Southern Dynasty, was ordered to annotate the "Book of Wei", "Book of Shu" and "Book of Wu". Pei Songzhi chose many materials discarded by Chen Shou in order to fill in the gaps and seek common ground while reserving differences. Since Pei Songzhi's annotations were widely recognized, "Three Kingdoms" exists in the form of Chen Zhi plus Pei's annotations. Many scholars believe that Pei Zhu and Chen Zhi have equal status, and Pei Zhuan should be included in the main text. Many stories in "The Romance of the Three Kingdoms" come from Pei Zhu. It is difficult for non-literary and history majors to read "Three Kingdoms" fluently. Translating it into vernacular can attract more readers. However, most of the existing modern translations have no translation or a complete translation of Pei's annotations. The translator used the December 1959 edition of "Three Kingdoms" published by Zhonghua Book Company as the base, and referred to Lu Bi's "Anthology of the Three Kingdoms" and the research results of scholars such as Professor Wu Jinhua of Fudan University and Professor Ni Yongming of Jiangsu University to complete the translation of Chen Zhi and Pei's Notes on "Three Kingdoms". The translator is not a major in literature and history, and his initial motivation was personal interest. It took ten years to complete the entire translation independently.
