In the late Tang Dynasty, the rivers were declining. The tidal flats along the Qiantang River were soaked with salt and frost, glowing palely in the dusk. Here, 19-year-old Qian Liu carried the shoulder pole that cost his life - on one side was the government's strict law that "smuggling more than one load of salt will not be punished" and the official salt monopoly of "fighting for salt and rice"; on the other side was the groans and hunger of the sick mother and young brother. The troubled times were like a dark night, swallowing him and countless ant-like poor people.
