Preface · Story Notes
This story is entirely fictional. All characters, place names, families, and events are artistic creations and are not based on real people or events. Any resemblance is purely coincidental.
Set against a century of turmoil from the late Qing dynasty through the Republic of China, the story follows Chen Mingming, the legitimate son of a prominent Jiangnan family. As his family is destroyed and he loses everything, he is rescued by Si Huanjun, a woman who has returned from studying abroad with a deep love for her country. One rescue, one debt of gratitude; a lifetime of devotion and protection. Through turbulent years, they meet, stay together, part, and miss their chances. A fountain pen serves as their token, binding their personal devotion to the fate of their homeland. Their legacy passes through five generations, and at last they witness a peaceful world.
The story begins in tragedy and ends in joy. It lays bare the helplessness of life in troubled times, while revealing a true love that refuses to die amid the dust.
