Du Xinwu, the Hero of the North and South

Du Xinwu's life is a microcosm of modern China - he came out of a remote area in western Hunan, passed through the late Qing Dynasty, the Republic of China, and New China, from a knight to a revolutionary, from rivers and lakes to temples, and finally returned to dust. His legend does not lie in those exaggerated magical powers, but in every choice made by an ordinary Chinese person in the face of the great era. The mission of this novel is not to create a "god", but to restore a "human" - flesh and blood, with love and hate, his persistence and his confusion. As he wrote in his later years: "The graceful promise strives for spring without staining, the old trunk has no branches, is strong and white, and is true." These sixteen words may be the best key to understanding Du Xinwu.
