Special forces instructor Lin Feng transmigrates a thousand years into the past after a magnetic storm, becoming Dong Tianbao, a young Shaolin novice. He and his junior, Zhang Junbao, depend on each other to survive, but their refusal to let fate dictate their lives sends them down different paths. Seeking power, Tianbao betrays his companions and kills Xiaodonggua, the girl who loves him, with his own hands, trading blood and tears for a rise through the ranks.
Junbao stays true to himself. Later, he finds enlightenment on Wudang Mountain, founds a great martial sect, and takes the name Zhang Sanfeng. The brothers lead very different lives: one rises and falls amid the court’s intrigues, while the other pursues cultivation in the martial world. Tianbao maneuvers among the Yuan court’s powerful, yet secretly spends his life protecting Wudang, shielding his junior and safeguarding his grand-junior Zhang Wuji. From Liu Jin’s pawn, he becomes a player moving the pieces himself; from an outcast of Shaolin, he climbs to become a Yuan general. He goes from cold and ruthless to tormented by inner demons. He never forgets the words “I decide my own fate,” yet loses himself with every choice he makes.
Xiangyang falls, the Southern Song is destroyed, and the brothers reunite only to part again. The Ming Cult rises, heroes gather, and Wuji grows up before retreating from the world. Tianbao struggles onward in the torrent of history, using his intelligence network and wealth to build Wudang a shield that will last a century. With the last of his strength, he protects all he holds dear.
On his deathbed, he confesses his identity as a transmigrator to Zhang Sanfeng in a letter: “Though I am a character in a book, my feelings and loyalties are real.” A century later, Zhang Sanfeng climbs alone to the Golden Summit and sets the iron Arhat from those days amid the sea of clouds. Morning bells ring below, and a new day begins. Just as Tianbao said, the sun will rise again after it sets. Our paths may end, but the road ahead for everyone else is long.
This is a story about choices and redemption. One man spends his life giving meaning to the words “I decide my own fate,” struggling in the mire of power and pressing on through an abyss of guilt, until at last he finds peace in his brother’s understanding.
