In the seventeenth year of the Republic of China, there was a severe drought in western Hunan, and people died of hunger all over the country.
That night, young Chen Jiusheng guarded his grandfather's coffin. The coffin lid flew off. He saw his grandfather standing up, his body covered with white hair, his eyes staring at him, and he turned around and disappeared into the rainstorm. All that was left was a sheepskin booklet recording "forbidden techniques" such as exorcism, soul control, and poison cultivation. From then on, this young man, regarded as the "coffin boy" by the whole village, embarked on a road of no return to find his relatives and save himself. He has seen the Gu women in the mountains of Miao territory, feeding golden silkworms with the flesh and blood of lovers; he has experienced the internal fighting on Longhu Mountain, where heavenly masters and evil spirits fought for a secret treasure; he even broke into a ghost town that was turned into a "hell on earth" by evil magic, where his grandfather was imprisoned, as well as all those who tried to change their lives against heaven for hundreds of years.
Taoism, Buddhism, witchcraft, sorcery... Collide fiercely in this ancient land. Some people want immortality, some people want revenge, and some people want to resurrect a dynasty that has long been destroyed.
As for Chen Jiusheng, he just wants to ask:
"Grandpa, are you dead or alive? Do you want me to save people or... Kill people by passing on this forbidden technique to me?"
This is a story about destiny, inheritance and struggle. How does a "coffin man" live his life as a walking monument in troubled times?
